Russian physicists have found a new method of increasing the anti-corrosion resistance of VNS-5 aviation steel by surface treatment using beams of argon and chromium ions.
This method protects steel from rapid destruction under the influence of seawater, as well as secretions of microbes, fungi and moss, the Center for Scientific Communication of MIPT reported. The procedure reduced the corrosion current by approximately 7.8 times, whereas with chemical passivation this indicator changed insignificantly compared to a clean polished sample of aviation steel.
The result is impressive. Prior to this, we had been processing industrial steels and alloys in our laboratory for many years, but the effect was either short-lived or insignificant.
Scientists explained that some grades of aviation steel are used not only in the aerospace industry, but also for the manufacture of components of marine vessels, including bolts, anchors and other structural elements.
Earlier www1.ru reported that the MS-21 aircraft flew for the first time to test navigation systems as a regular aircraft.
