A Mi-8 helicopter of the National Sanitary Aviation Service (NSAS) of the Rostec State Corporation evacuated a sailor from the fishing and krill trawler "Vladimir Starzhinsky", which was operating in the Bering Sea in the Anadyr Bay. A 28-year-old crew member suffered an open leg fracture.
He needed urgent medical attention. The rescue operation lasted three and a half hours.
During this time, the Mi-8 helicopter flew to the fishing vessel. The pilots "fixed" the position of the helicopter above the trawler's deck and, with the help of rescuers, lifted the patient on board using a winch cargo system.
Mi-8 is a Soviet multi-purpose helicopter, developed at OKB-329 under the leadership of designer Mikhail Mil. It is the most mass-produced twin-engine helicopter in the world. The helicopter was put into operation in 1965.
