The Russian University of Transport (RUT, formerly MIIT) has launched a unique experiment in remote control of an autonomous boat in real conditions. As part of an expedition on the Don River, it is planned to cover more than 300 km, testing remote navigation technologies directly from Moscow. The project is being implemented jointly with Moscow State University (MSU).
The purpose of the expedition is to conduct environmental monitoring, with plans to collect 450 liters of water samples.
In addition, experts intend to test the operation of the boat in autonomous mode and create a digital map of the river's condition using acoustic profiling. This is the first step towards creating autonomous water resource monitoring laboratories.
Previously, RUT (MIIT), together with the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), conducted successful tests of autonomous unmanned boats. The vessels moved along a pre-laid route in the western bay of the Moskva River in Nagatino.
