New extortion scheme: fraudsters use AI to create fake intimate photos of Russians

Fraudsters blackmail with fake photos created from social media images

Malefactors are using artificial intelligence to generate fake nude photos of Russians in order to extort money.

According to T-Bank, fraudsters find 3–4 photos of a person on social networks and use a neural network to create fake explicit images based on them. Then they send threats via messengers, demanding money under the threat of publishing the pictures.

The average ransom amount is 40 thousand rubles. In some cases, blackmailers force their victims to take out a loan if they do not have the required amount, the bank said.

Fake images are visually almost indistinguishable from real ones and reliably mimic the victim's appearance. Most of the victims are Russians aged 23 to 30.
