New air defense echelon: Russia proposes creating small laser systems to combat UAVs

So far, only one laser system is in service — "Peresvet"

To effectively combat small-sized drones in Russia, it is necessary to develop portable and mobile laser systems that can be used on advanced positions. This opinion was expressed by the head of the Bureau of Military-Political Analysis, Alexander Mikhailov.

According to him, this area is now developing very rapidly, thanks to which the anti-aircraft gunners have another echelon of air defense.

There must be, of course, portable laser systems. I, of course, am not talking about some kind of fantasy about blasters and so on, but we are, in principle, already approaching this topic, technically approaching it.
Alexander Mikhailov, military expert

Mikhailov clarified that so far Russia has only one laser system in service — "Peresvet", which has become an element of strategic anti-missile defense.

According to the expert, work on a small laser complex is most likely already underway in a closed mode, since the technological process itself is not a secret for scientists.

Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev also proposed deploying highly efficient air defense systems based on new physical principles to protect important facilities from strike drones.

Earlier www1.ru reported that RD-107/RD-108 engines for Soyuz rockets reached a reliability rate of 99.9%.
