ODK Explains Impossibility of Installing Bird Protection Mesh on Russian Aircraft Engines

Such a design would create additional resistance at the inlet of the power unit

Bird protection meshes are not installed on Russian aircraft engines. The United Engine Corporation (ODK) explained the reason for this decision.

Designer Pavel Chupin noted that a mesh cannot be installed because all such devices create resistance at the engine inlet.

Gas turbine units are designed in such a way that a bird strike will not become a critical situation. Even the regulations provide for testing with birds of different weights.

Chupin added that when a bird enters the engine, there should be no emergency consequences, such as a fan blade breaking off. But even if it breaks off, it should not leave the engine, and the aircraft should land in a normal mode.

Earlier, Rostec reported that the MC-21 airliner was given the task of competing with Boeing and Airbus.
