Bird strike grids are not installed on Russian aircraft engines. The United Engine Corporation (UEC) explained the reason for this decision.
Designer Pavel Chupin noted that a grid cannot be installed because all such devices create resistance at the engine inlet.
Gas turbine units are designed in such a way that a bird strike will not become a critical situation. Even the regulations provide for testing with birds of different weights.
Chupin added that when a bird enters the engine, there should be no emergency consequences, for example, a fan blade breaking off. But even if it breaks off, it should not leave the engine, and the aircraft will land in a normal mode.
Earlier, Rostec reported that the MC-21 airliner was given the task of competing with Boeing and Airbus.
