Building a new domestic gas carrier for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from scratch will take at least six years, but personnel still need to be trained and shipyards created. This is stated in a study by the scientific council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the study of the Arctic and Antarctic.
The authors noted that it is also necessary to find the main contractors, develop a system for storing and transporting LNG, and design engines and a propeller-rudder complex.
It is noted that a number of competencies will have to be developed from scratch to ensure technological sovereignty. To a large extent, this applies to Arctic large-capacity shipbuilding — from the design of ships and cryogenic equipment to the creation of the required shipyards.
In Russia, the Zvezda shipyard is currently engaged in the construction of gas carriers.
