Towards Records: Kola Nuclear Power Plant May Reach Maximum Output by 2028

Plant Director Vasily Omelchuk is confident that in the next few years the maximum capacity of the plant will be in demand

Kola Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) may reach its maximum electricity generation of 14.1 billion kilowatt-hours within the next four years. The plant's capacity will exceed the design capacity of 1900 MW. This was announced to journalists by the plant's director, Vasily Omelchuk.

According to him, the plant will be fully in demand in 2028-2029. It is then that it will reach its maximum capacity, which currently stands at 1769 MW. Tests have shown that the power units can withstand loads of up to 1900 MW.

These results have become possible due to improved equipment safety, reduced planned maintenance times, and the absence of unplanned shutdowns.

In 2024, KNPP has already set a record, generating almost 11.4 billion kilowatt-hours. This accounted for more than 60% of all electricity produced in the Murmansk region last year.

Kola Nuclear Power Plant was built between 1973 and 1984. The first power unit was commissioned in 1973, and the last, the fourth, in 1984. The plant remains the main source of electrical energy in the Murmansk region and Karelia.
