The world's first M100 fuel oil disaster occurred in the Kerch Strait: the fuel cannot be cleaned using traditional methods

The number of damaged tanks in the sunken tankers "Volgoneft" has been established

The Marine Rescue Service has established that four fuel oil tanks were damaged on the sunken tankers "Volgoneft". All the damage is concentrated in the fault zone of the ships' hulls. Other parts of the tankers remained undamaged, and no fuel oil leaks were recorded from them.

The volume of oil products that entered the sea amounted to about 2.4 thousand tons, which turned out to be significantly less than preliminary estimates based on reports from ship captains.

The coordination meeting of the Operational Headquarters of the Krasnodar Territory discussed the features of the accident. This emergency was the world's first disaster associated with M100 fuel oil, which is denser than water and does not float to the surface, but goes to the bottom or remains in the water column. The lack of proven technologies for removing such fuel from water complicates the elimination of the consequences, so the main method remains the collection of fuel oil from the shores.

The Operational Headquarters has formed a working group of scientists to develop technologies for cleaning contaminated beaches. The task of the specialists is to find a way to clean the sand so that it can be returned to the beaches, as well as to develop methods for working with pebble and rocky areas. Proposals from licensed organizations are being considered, taking into account the specifics of M100 fuel oil.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that two areas of pollution were identified in Crimea. The first, 1.8 km long, was recorded in the Kerch area, the second, 2.1 km long, was in the Leninsky district. Cleaning of the territory and removal of contaminated soil are carried out in these areas.

Additionally, new emissions of fuel oil were found on the beaches of Anapa after the storm, the operational headquarters of the Krasnodar Territory reported. Cleaning of the coastline continues. Rescuers and volunteers removed 320 cubic meters of garbage from the Anapa coast in a day.
