Slimmed Down for Flight: Perm Polytechnic Institute Implements High-Temperature Polymer Composites in Aircraft Engines

Innovation Reduces Gas Generator Weight by 6 kg

Perm Polytechnic Institute has implemented high-temperature polymer composites in a gas generator, a key part of an aircraft engine. This was reported by the university's press service.

The gas generator converts fuel energy into hot gases that create thrust. The operating temperature in this device can reach 800 °C, which requires the use of heat-resistant materials.

The new polymer composites can withstand temperatures up to 350 °C. This approach eliminates the need for traditional thermal protection.

The use of high-temperature polymer composites simplifies the design of the gas generator and reduces its weight by at least 6 kg. This makes the product easier to assemble by more than 10%.
Vyacheslav Artemyev, Deputy Director for Production at the Scientific and Educational Center for Aviation Composite Technologies of PNIU

The developed instructions for aircraft manufacturers contain recommendations for the manufacture and assembly of gas generator skin from heat-resistant composites. The development increases the reliability and efficiency of engines.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that Rostec presented the latest 177S aircraft engine for combat aviation for the first time.
