Russian Railways Announces Potential to Increase Sapsan Speed to 322 km/h

The company is exploring opportunities to accelerate trains on certain sections of the route

Russian Railways (RZD) has announced the potential to accelerate the Sapsan train.

Currently, the train's speed is limited to 250 km/h due to the high load on the infrastructure, and it reaches this speed on five sections between Moscow and St. Petersburg, including areas such as the Mstinsky Bridge - Okulovka, Malaya Vishera - Burga, and Leontyevo - Vyshny Volochek.

However, according to representatives of Russian Railways, the company sees opportunities to increase the speed. During tests, drivers were able to accelerate the train to 291 km/h, and the maximum design speed of the Sapsan is 300 km/h. Russian Railways also noted that the Sapsan is capable of accelerating to 322 km/h, which is comparable to future trains for high-speed railways (HSR), which will be designed with a maximum speed of 360 km/h.
