Scientists from Oryol State University named after I. S. Turgenev have created a new method for accurate diagnosis of liver tumors during biopsy. It is based on the analysis of fluorescence spectra and allows, with a high degree of accuracy, to determine the type of tumor, whether it is primary malignant neoplasms, metastases, or benign neoplasms. A machine learning algorithm is used to improve the accuracy of diagnosis.

This method demonstrates high diagnostic efficacy. The sensitivity and specificity of the classifier exceed 90%, which allows to accurately distinguish between different types and subtypes of neoplasms. This solution helps doctors not only identify the type of tumor, but also assess the condition of the liver tissue with minimal errors.

In addition, the development of Oryol scientists provides control over the position of the biopsy needle during the procedure. This significantly increases the accuracy of minimally invasive interventions, allowing to obtain a preliminary conclusion about the type of neoplasm already during the operation.
