The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force spotted a Yasen-class (Project 885) nuclear submarine near its waters for the first time. A Lockheed P-3 Orion patrol aircraft monitored the movements of the submarine, equipped with 4th-generation cruise missiles, according to the Eurasian Times.
The Japanese Ministry of Defense reported that 3 Russian warships and a submarine passed through the Soya Strait (La Perouse Strait). The group of ships included the destroyer "Marshal Shaposhnikov", the measuring complex ship "Marshal Krylov", and a rescue tug.
A Lockheed P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft from the 2nd Squadron, based at Hachinohe Air Base on Honshu Island, monitored the Russian flotilla.
According to the Eurasian Times, the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet includes two Yasen-class submarines: the "Novosibirsk" and the "Krasnoyarsk". Submarines of this class are distinguished by their stealth and powerful weaponry.
Yu Koizumi, an associate professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo, stated that since 2021, Russian nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines have increased patrols in the region, likely for nuclear deterrence purposes.
