The Russian Aerospace Forces used a 500 kg volume-detonating aerial bomb. Epic footage of the projectile being dropped has appeared online.
The video shows that a huge shock wave arose at the site after the projectile detonated. It is currently unknown from which particular aircraft the bomb was dropped.
Rosoboronexport clarified that the bomb is designed to destroy industrial facilities, manpower, lightly vulnerable equipment for clearing anti-personnel and anti-tank minefields. It can be used from both aircraft and helicopters.
The author of the Telegram channel Fighterbomber noted that the principle of operation of the ODAБ - 500П bomb is very simple. A special liquid is poured into the bomb, which, when detonated by a primary charge, is scattered around, turning into a gas-air mixture and, in hundredths of a second, fills the space around it.
Then this cloud is ignited by a secondary charge, and instantly expanding, creates a shock wave, burning out all the oxygen in a certain volume.
Main characteristics of ODAБ-500П:
- Bomb weight — 525 kg
- Weight of explosive in TNT equivalent — 193 kg
- Aircraft application modes at altitude — 200-12 000 m
- Aircraft application modes at speed — up to 1 500 km/h
