The U.S. government has approved the sale of 720 missiles for the Stinger man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) to Egypt. The contract is estimated at $740 million. This is Egypt's response to the threat from Ethiopia, which has Soviet Su-27 fourth-generation all-weather heavy fighters, Bulgarian Military writes.
Stinger MANPADS missiles intercept targets at low altitudes. This is crucial for countering Su-27 fighters.
In addition to tensions with Ethiopia, Egypt has strained relations with Libya and Sudan. The Libyan Air Force is armed with MiG-23 and MiG-29 aircraft, while Sudan has Su-25 and MiG-21 aircraft.
It is expected that equipping Egypt with Stinger MANPADS will significantly increase the country's ability to protect critical infrastructure from aerial threats.
