A company from Rostec Group will assist in launching a metallurgical plant in Nigeria. The Russian Foreign Economic Association "Tyazhpromexport", together with "Novostal-M", the Proforce Manufacturing Limited consortium, and the Nigerian Ministry of Steel Development, signed a memorandum of cooperation in Moscow to restore the Ajaokuta Steel Plant.
The construction of this enterprise began in 1979 with the active support of the USSR. By the early 90s, the plant was 98% ready, including the construction of three rolling mills and its own thermal power plant. However, the collapse of the Soviet Union halted the completion of the project.
Today, only a few small production workshops operate at the plant, while most of the facilities remain mothballed.
Previously, Nigeria had attempted to attract international companies to complete the construction, but without success. The new project should strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the field of metallurgy and give a new impetus to the development of the plant.
