The device was developed by specialists from the research institute of the scientific-production association "LUCH" (JSC "NII NPO "LUCH", part of the Scientific Division of the Rosatom State Corporation). The system, which can handle products of complex geometric shapes, is planned to be used for the development and manufacture of complex products from lightweight silicon carbide obtained by SLS. For example, for the production of fuel rod cladding of a new generation or disc brakes for the automotive industry.
The unit, as noted in the press service of Rosatom, has a working area of 1000×1000 mm. At the same time, it is possible to limit the working field to a size of 300×300 mm, which minimizes the consumption of raw materials in the manufacture of compact products.
Also, the unit allows the use of four to nine scanning devices, which expands the possibilities for the production of large-sized silicon carbide products.
A feature of the development is the vertical arrangement of scanners, which allows increasing their number on one additive device. Thanks to this, the working field also increases, which in turn allows making large-sized parts, as well as increasing the productivity of the process by 3-4 times.
The tests carried out confirmed the full compliance of the characteristics of the prototype of the selective laser sintering unit with a new cluster laser-optical scanning system with the requirements of the technical specifications.
Silicon carbide products, with which the unit will work, are in demand in many areas of modern industry: from the nuclear industry to the automotive industry. In terms of hardness, silicon carbide is only slightly inferior to diamond, it has good structural strength, thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion and excellent tribological properties.
