The Project 12700 Alexandrite-class minesweeper "Afanasy Ivannikov" was launched on Friday at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipbuilding Plant (SNSZ, part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, USC) in St. Petersburg, the USC press service reported.
The project was developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau of USC for the Russian Navy. The ships belong to a new generation of mine-countermeasure forces and are designed to combat naval mines, which can be detected both in the seabed and in the water area, without entering the danger zone.
To combat mines, ships of the project can use various types of trawls, including autonomous and remotely controlled unmanned underwater vehicles.
Characteristics of the Project 12700 Mine Defense Ship:
- Displacement — about 890 tons
- Length — about 62 m
- Width — about 10 m
- Full speed — about 16 knots
- Crew — 44 people
Earlier www1.ru reported that the Russian military installed the MT-12 Rapira anti-tank gun on a high-speed MT-LB tracked vehicle. Thus, they solved the problem of transporting the gun.
