The popular Polish online publication INTERIA was impressed by a recent development for the Russian army from Altai engineers «Tarantula-Bird Catcher». It paralyzes UAVs.
In the Polish material, it is called not «Tarantula-Bird Catcher», but «Netcomet», that is, «Net Thrower» in a mixture of English, Polish and Russian languages at once. The video and photo in the text indicate that it is about «Tarantula».
[...] The Russian «Netcomet» deserves attention, because, of course, there is the possibility of practical application of such solutions in the army. Moreover, the system presented in the recording does not need specialized drones, because it is an addition to the popular standard version of the Mavic drone, activated by a simple backlight switch. Which means that almost any drone can be equipped with such a network.
Such a system can be installed on DJI Mavic 3, DJI Mavic 2, Autel Evo 2, Uco copters, as well as on FPV drones. It doesn't weigh that much.
The net can be deployed using compressed air, spring mechanisms, and even small explosives to ensure rapid and accurate deployment. After a successful capture, the net entangles the drone's propellers and other critical components, preventing it from flying. Some systems are designed to safely deliver the captured drone to the ground, while others are designed to simply drop it to the ground.
The Polish publication does not exclude that the mass use of such technology by Russian units is very likely in the future. It is noted that the work of «Tarantulas» - «Netcomet» is associated with close coordination of units among themselves in order to avoid «friendly fire» by paralyzing networks. Also, a lot of highly qualified UAV operators are needed to work with such systems.
