On March 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a video conference with members of the government, launched the project to build a high-speed railway (HSR) that will connect Moscow and St. Petersburg. Fourteen stations will be built between the endpoints of the route.
A report on the future HSR was presented by the head of the Ministry of Transport of Russia, Vitaly Savelyev. According to him, high-speed lines will fundamentally change the transport landscape of the industry.
Putin noted that it is important to rely on domestic developments when building the HSR. This will help ensure technological sovereignty.
I would like to emphasize that, during construction, primarily domestic developments and equipment should be used.
What is known about the HSR
The trains, which will travel at a speed of 400 km/h, will be built by Sinara and Transmashholding. The first train is expected to appear in 2027. AI technologies will be implemented in its control system.
Each train will consist of 8 to 16 cars, in which passengers will be offered four classes of service. The interval between trains will be 10–15 minutes, and the journey time from St. Petersburg to Moscow will be 2 hours 15 minutes.
The launch of the HSR is scheduled for 2028. By 2030, the estimated passenger traffic will be at least 23 million people.
