Experts of the Krasnoyarsk State Agrarian University (KrasGAU) have bred new varieties of potatoes and soybeans, which are adapted to the climate in Siberia. The implementation of these varieties in agriculture will prevent the loss of some of the crop due to frost.
Frost is a key problem for the agricultural business in Siberia, but Krasnoyarsk scientists have been able to solve it. Two varieties of potatoes and two varieties of soybeans bred by breeders have a low sprouting rate. The foliage appears only when the warm weather is established, explained in the university.
As the Vice-Rector for Science of KrasGAU Alexander Kolomeitsev emphasized, potatoes form tubers even before the onset of summer heat, and nutrients accumulate in them by the end of August. According to him, the soy obtained by specialists is the most 'northern' in the world.
It is noted that new varieties were obtained through breeding: about 200 varieties of potatoes were crossed in nurseries, as well as more than 180 varieties of soybeans. The novelties have already passed state tests to determine varietal qualities of plants.
