The results of testing the Russian T-90S tank for the Indian market impressed high-ranking military officials in the republic. This reaction was reported by the press service of Uralvagonzavod (part of Rostec).
On May 17, 1999, three T-90S prototypes were sent to the Thar Desert, where they covered more than 2,000 km in the harshest conditions — from hellish heat to devastating downpours. The test results impressed the Indian side.
The T-90S is the second deterrence factor after nuclear weapons.
The final document, signed in February 2001, provided for the delivery of finished tanks and vehicle kits for assembly in India. Four years passed from the tank's first display at the Abu Dhabi exhibition in 1997 to the contract.
The Indian contract not only helped Uralvagonzavod preserve combat vehicle production, but also became an impetus for the revival of Russia's entire tank industry.
Research fellow at the Central Economic and Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ivan Grachyov noted that the Russian Federation earned $6 billion from T-90S deliveries to India over the entire period of cooperation.
