Aeroflot explained why aircraft landing gear has small wheels. They really look miniature against the background of a massive fuselage. The company's press service clarified this issue.
According to a representative of the airline, each aircraft wheel is designed to withstand loads of tens of tons and function in conditions that even racing cars can envy.
During takeoff, the aircraft accelerates to a speed of 200–300 km/h in just a few seconds. During landing, the wheels collide with sudden friction against the runway surface, which occurs at speeds exceeding 300 km/h. All this creates significant loads on the chassis, and therefore, before each flight, technicians carefully check the wheels for damage, cracks and other defects.
Tire replacement is carried out depending on the degree of wear. They are usually restored, but no more than five times. Some models have special indicators on the tread that signal the need for replacement. The size of the wheels is due to the technical features of the aircraft design.
