Most Western analysts consider the Russian anti-aircraft missile system (SAM, developed by engineers of JSC "Concern VKO "Almaz-Antey"") S-500 Prometheus to be "first-class." This is according to military expert Maya Karlin in the article "Russia Has the Right to Be Proud of Its Missile Defense System" for The National Interest.
The Kremlin claims that the S-500 SAM system is the only weapon capable of intercepting Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, which have an estimated range of about 300 miles and a top speed of Mach 10.
Karlin referred to a report by The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS, based in Washington), according to which the S-500 is equipped with 40N6M missiles (range up to 400 km) and 77N6 missiles (range of about 600 km).
