Most Western analysts consider the Russian S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft missile system (SAM, developed by engineers of JSC Concern VKO Almaz-Antey) to be"first-class". This was written by military expert Maya Karlin in the article"Russia Has the Right to Be Proud of Its Missile Defense System" for The National Interest.
The Kremlin claims that the S-500 SAM system is the only weapon capable of intercepting Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, which have an estimated range of about 300 miles and a top speed of Mach 10.
Karlin referred to a report by The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS, based in Washington), according to which the S-500 is equipped with 40N6M missiles (range up to 400 km) and 77N6 missiles (range of about 600 km).
Characteristics of the S-500 Prometheus SAM system:
- Platform: mobile
- Target detection range: 800 kilometers
- Combat radius: 600 kilometers
- Number of missiles: 2-4 units
- Maximum speed of the target being hit: 7 km\/s
- Maximum target engagement altitude: 200 km
