Lada Azimut to get 150-hp turbo engine and classic automatic transmission in 2027

The new version is currently undergoing tests, AvtoVAZ must prepare prototypes

The Lada Azimut has just entered production, but AvtoVAZ is already preparing a more powerful version for the crossover. In 2027, the model may receive a 150-hp turbocharged engine paired with a classic hydromechanical automatic transmission. However, the car still has to undergo testing and fine-tuning before mass production.

Serial production of the Lada Azimut started at AvtoVAZ on September 25, 2026. In the first stage, the crossover is produced with naturally aspirated engines of 1.6 and 1.8 liters, with capacities of 120 and 132 hp, respectively. Depending on the version, they work with a six-speed manual transmission or a variator.

The next step should be a turbocharged version. The head of AvtoVAZ, Maxim Sokolov, reported that by the end of 2026, the company plans to assemble a series of prototypes with a 150-hp turbo engine and a hydromechanical "automatic". After that, they will have to undergo testing, fine-tuning, and an assessment of customer demand.

The gasoline-powered Azimut itself has already moved from development to industrial production. The first cars rolled off the main AvtoVAZ assembly line in Tolyatti on September 25. Sales are expected at the end of 2026.

The crossover is built on a deeply modernized Lada Vesta platform. At launch, its engine range is limited to two naturally aspirated engines: a 1.6-liter with 120 hp and a 1.8-liter with 132 hp. A more powerful turbocharged version with a conventional automatic transmission should expand this lineup after sales begin.

In parallel, AvtoVAZ is also working on a hybrid Azimut. In September, the company showed a prototype with all-wheel drive and a power unit of about 390 hp. The final decision on serial production should be made after testing.
