The multi-purpose MiG-31 interceptor fighter has not yet exhausted its potential for modernization and further development. The unique flight and technical characteristics of the aircraft allow for the creation of new aviation complexes based on the family, said "Pervy Tekhnichesky" designer of the MiG Design Bureau Nikolai Chikunov.

The engineer attributes this to the special significance of the Nizhny Novgorod plant "Sokol", which is engaged not only in repair, but also in deep modernization and re-equipment of the MiG-31.
"The '31st' has by no means exhausted its capabilities and modernization potential, the possibilities for developing combat qualities, taking into account its unique flight and technical characteristics – this is a fact.
Chikunov expressed the opinion that the current production capabilities of "Sokol" cannot be considered solely from the point of view of current orders.
The possible loading of the Nizhny Novgorod plant with the "Osvey" civil aircraft project raised questions from the specialist. Chikunov believes that if insufficient free capacity remains, this will become a limiting factor for the development of the MiG-31.
Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Gennady Abramenkov noted that "Sokol" has not yet been officially chosen as the production site for "Osvey"; it is only one of several options.
