The horizontal winglets of the Russian SJ-100 are not only for improving aerodynamics. Their design helps to simultaneously save fuel and expand the aircraft's operational capabilities, explained Egor Popov, Director of the Production Center of PAO "Yakovlev".
The winglets will make it possible to use engine thrust more efficiently and consume less fuel in cruise mode.
The horizontal winglet allows the aircraft to save fuel and land on shorter runways – 1900 m long.
The ability to operate from a runway about 1900 m long is especially important for regional routes where the infrastructure of large airports is absent. For comparison, the Canadian Bombardier CRJ900 requires a runway of more than 2000 m for landing.
Popov added that the current order for the SJ-100 is 42 aircraft, of which 27 are in an advanced stage of readiness, and six aircraft are already about 90% assembled.
Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov reported that serial production of import-substituted SSJ-100 will begin in 2027.
