STM and YaMZ are creating a domestic undercarriage diesel engine to replace German MTU engines

The horizontal module is being developed based on YaMZ-777

Sinara – Transport Machines (STM) holding, together with Yaroslavl Motor Plant (YaMZ), is developing a horizontal diesel module for installation in the undercarriage space. The project was reported by the Rollingstock Telegram channel.

As explained by STM, work began about a year ago. The created diesel generator is designed to replace similar power units that were previously supplied from Germany under the MTU brand (part of British Rolls-Royce). The module is based on the YaMZ-777 engine (based on YaMZ-770) with a nominal power of 441 kW at a rotational speed of 1900 rpm. The specific fuel consumption is stated at 210 g/kWh, and the mass of the fueled engine is 1210 kg.

Alexander Sachkov noted that the project is complex from a layout perspective. If a straight-six diesel engine is simply laid on its side, it will not fit into the undercarriage space – there are many technical nuances. The developed module will include the diesel engine itself, a cooling system, and all necessary drives. The execution can be either electric or hydraulic with cardan shafts on the bogie.

According to a representative of the STM Research Center, the diesel generator can be located in the same place where the battery packs are located in the prospective ES109 train (Finist platform). The readiness dates for the solution and the rolling stock model on which it will be applied have not yet been announced. Until the 2000s, Lyudinovo Locomotive Plant (part of STM) produced only prototypes of diesel trains, and MTU undercarriage engines were supplied for several generations of RA rail buses from Metrovagonmash. Production of the latest version – RA3 "Orlan" – ceased in 2022.
