The Russian army has received modernized "Geran" series drones with an important addition – an onboard electronic warfare system to counter interceptors. Military expert Yuri Knutov tried to explain the operating scheme of the updated drone.
The scheme itself is implemented using two cameras. One acts as the main camera for targeting, and the second, wide-angle camera, is installed in the rear projection to monitor the situation.
Thanks to this camera, the approaches of enemy air defense drones are tracked by operators, and at the right moment, the suppression system is activated. As a result, the video transmission channel from the enemy drone's optics is jammed, and the air defense operator becomes powerless.
Knutov added that the electronic warfare system does not affect the "Geran" itself, and its targeting is not compromised. He suggested that this refers specifically to the "Geran-2" version with an internal combustion engine, which has been retrofitted with electronic warfare.
Military expert Nikolay Tsygikalo noted that the newest "Geran-5" may use GLONASS or GPS satellite navigation. He compared the jet drone to a FAB-100 aerial bomb, but with a greater range of application.
