MS-21 proposed to return to its former Russian name - Yak-242

The project was called that from 1993 to 2003

It was proposed to name the new medium-haul MS-21 with its original name — Yak-242. This idea was put forward by journalist and aviation expert Valentin Bogdanov.

According to him, for the airliner, which is undergoing a large-scale import substitution program, the return of the historical name would be a logical step.

It would also be good to return the aircraft's native Russian name. Yakovlev 242. According to our tradition.

The name Yak-242 was used in the early stages of the prospective medium-haul aircraft project — from 1993 to 2003. Later, the aircraft received the designation MS-21, under which serial development is currently underway.

Earlier, the Public Movement "Veterans of Russia" proposed renaming MS-21 and Superjet SJ-100 to "Yak-121" and "Yak-100", respectively. They explained that such a measure would help reflect belonging to Russian aircraft manufacturing and historical heritage instead of English-language names.
