The interception of three Geran-2 type drones using F-16 fighters cost approximately 1.5 million euros, which showed a serious imbalance between the cost of destruction means and aerial targets. This conclusion was reached after analyzing the operation in Romania, where expensive AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles were used to destroy UAVs.
According to the Romanian publication Digi24, the main part of the expenses came from the use of short-range guided missiles with infrared homing heads. At the same time, the cost of one loitering munition is significantly lower than the price of an air-to-air missile.
The situation became an example of a problem faced by modern air defense systems: expensive high-precision means have to be used against mass and relatively cheap targets. With widespread use of drones, this approach can lead to rapid depletion of missile stocks and increased defense costs.
A similar approach is being considered for Russian aviation. As a possible solution for Su-30SM2 and Su-35S fighters, the use of S-8L guided missiles developed by the Kalashnikov concern is mentioned. These munitions are designed to hit light targets and can become a more economical option for combating small drones.
The experience of recent years shows that countering mass UAVs requires not only effective weapons, but also an economically justified interception system. The main question is not only the ability to destroy the target, but also the cost of each such interception.
