Fraudsters have learned how to remotely turn iPhones, iPads, and Macs into useless devices, not by exploiting a system vulnerability, but by using legitimate security features. The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs explained that the scheme relies on the owners' gullibility and the specifics of Apple's services.
First, attackers use social engineering to obtain the login, password, or confirmation code for an iCloud account. After logging in, they open the "Find My iPhone" service and put the device into lock mode.
Then Activation Lock kicks in – a standard security feature designed to prevent unauthorized users from using a stolen device. As a result, the real owner loses access to their iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized that this is not a software error. Criminals exploit Apple's normal security mechanisms by gaining control over the user's account. Such cases, according to the agency, are regularly recorded.
