In the Nizhny Novgorod region, a restored four-car ER9E electric train, named "Red Bird," has entered service. The renovated train made its inaugural journey on the route between Nizhny Novgorod and Semyonov on June 2. In the future, this transport will operate on popular tourist routes and transport passengers to events.
The restoration project was implemented jointly by the Volga-Vyatka Suburban Passenger Company and the Gorky Railway, a branch of RZD. Capital restoration repairs with extended service life were carried out at the Gorky-Moskovsky motor-car depot, where the train underwent comprehensive modernization.
According to Ramil Mingazov, Deputy Head of the Gorky Directorate of Motor-Car Rolling Stock, some components were preserved in working condition, but a number of systems had to be completely restored, including motor-compressor equipment. Roof equipment, control systems, door mechanisms, sanitary facilities were also repaired, and electrical equipment, installation, and wheel-motor blocks were diagnosed.
A separate stage was the internal modernization and stylization of the cars, carried out by the Volga-Vyatka Suburban Passenger Company. The company clarified that the concept of the train was developed in advance, after which interior layouts were prepared. Then, work was carried out to replace windows, insulate, install restored benches and furniture, and place items from the Soviet era.
Each car is decorated with its own theme related to Soviet culture: "Nu, pogodi!", "Back to the USSR", "Vysotsky", and "Love and Doves". The interiors feature authentic artifacts of the era – from a typewriter and a radiogram to a 1960s ZIL refrigerator and a telephone booth with a payphone. A buffet and a soda machine, made according to Soviet models, are also provided for passengers.
