Schoolchild asked AI - and stopped thinking: RAS academician assessed the risk of neural networks

Vladislav Lektorsky warned about students' blind trust in ChatGPT

The widespread use of artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT can discourage schoolchildren from thinking independently. This was stated by RAS academician, chairman of the Scientific Council on Artificial Intelligence Methodology and Cognitive Research of the RAS, Vladislav Lektorsky.

According to him, this problem is already manifesting itself in education. Schoolchildren are increasingly turning to neural networks for ready-made answers to various questions, which can lead them to get used to not analyzing information independently.

"A schoolchild, for answers to all sorts of questions, turns to these artificial intelligence systems, like ChatGPT and other large language models. And stops thinking," Lektorsky said.

The academician noted that the task of schools today is not just to impart knowledge, but to develop critical and independent thinking. Without this, a student may begin to unconditionally trust AI answers, even if they are erroneous.

If a schoolchild is used to trusting artificial intelligence, then if AI tells him that 2×2=5, he will believe it and think that it is so. This is a terrible thing.

According to the academician, clear boundaries must be defined in education: where artificial intelligence can be a useful tool, and where its use is unacceptable.
