Massive DDoS Attacks Hit Telecom and Tourism in Early May

Attackers Chose a Moment When Technical Specialists Were on Holiday

StormWall specialists recorded a sharp surge in DDoS attacks on Russian companies during the May holidays. From May 1 to May 10, the number of attacks on telecom operators increased by 83% compared to the same period in 2025. The tourism sector was attacked 71% more often, and the entertainment sector by 68%.

The attackers deliberately targeted industries most vulnerable during the holiday period. Telecom companies could not afford internet outages during peak days, the tourism sector – airlines, aggregators, booking systems – receives a significant share of its annual revenue precisely in May, and entertainment platforms served millions of Russians who stayed home for the holidays. Every hour of downtime during these days threatened serious financial losses, and the attackers bet on blackmail and extortion.

Ramil Khantimirov, CEO and co-founder of StormWall, explained why the attacks were effective: while businesses operate at their limit, technical specialists go on vacation, attack control weakens, and companies become easy prey for hackers. In fact, the attackers used the classic "holiday window" tactic, when staff is understaffed and the cost of downtime is maximal.
