Russian IT Market Hit by Wave of "Fake Hardware"

Components for Dell EMC, Lenovo, and Cisco Systems are most frequently counterfeited

Counterfeit components for foreign IT equipment have become increasingly common in the Russian market. According to "K2Tech" estimates, the share of counterfeit parts for servers and data storage systems reached 18.2% by the end of 2025, and in some segments, it is already approaching 80%.

Components for Dell EMC are most frequently counterfeited – this brand accounted for 22% of detected counterfeits. This is followed by Lenovo, Cisco Systems, Hitachi Vantara, and Dell Technologies. Analysts attribute this to the fact that equipment from these companies is still widely used in Russian data centers and corporate infrastructure.

After the departure of Western vendors, traditional supplies of original parts began to collapse, and the market was gradually filled by alternative suppliers and gray schemes. At the same time, demand for components remains high: about 70% of the IT infrastructure of Russian companies still runs on foreign equipment that requires maintenance and repair.

Experts note that modern counterfeits have become significantly more dangerous. While previously counterfeits could be identified by markings or casing quality, now re-flashed components are increasingly appearing on the market, which are almost impossible to distinguish without tests and laboratory verification. Some parts only start to malfunction under high load or quickly fail after installation.

The market warns that the use of such components can lead to data loss, reduced performance, and even complete equipment failure.

The situation may also be complicated by new regulations. From May 27, 2026, some server equipment, data storage systems, and drives from foreign brands, including HP, Cisco, and IBM, will be excluded from the list of permitted parallel imports. Market participants fear that this will further push the market towards an increase in counterfeits and gray supplies.
