Cosmonauts Kud-Sverchkov and Mikaev to Perform Complex Operation Outside ISS

A solar telescope, crystals, and bacteria after five years in vacuum - the main tasks for the May 27 spacewalk have been revealed

On May 27, Russian cosmonauts will conduct a spacewalk from the International Space Station. During the extravehicular activity, the crew will install new scientific equipment and retrieve the results of several experiments. The work will be performed by Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikaev.

The spacewalk will begin at 17:15 Moscow time. Kud-Sverchkov will work in the "Orlan-MKS" No. 7 spacesuit, and Mikaev in the "Orlan-MKS" No. 6. Cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev will remain inside the station and control the European robotic arm ERA.

During work on the "Zvezda" module, the crew will install a radio telescope weighing about 50 kilograms. The instrument is designed to observe solar flares and study the Sun's activity.

Using the ERA robotic arm, one of the cosmonauts will be moved to the "Nauka" module, where they will retrieve a cassette with samples of gallium arsenide crystals grown in orbit.

The cosmonauts will also remove the "Biorisk" experiment container from the "Poisk" module, which has been in open space for almost five years. Scientists plan to study how vacuum and cosmic radiation affected bacteria, seeds, and crustacean cysts placed inside the container.
