Bangladesh Wants to Buy Yak-130 and Mi-17 Amid Risk of US Sanctions

The CAATSA law introduces the risk of secondary restrictions against countries that purchase Russian weapons

Russia and Bangladesh are discussing the possibility of new deliveries of Yak-130 combat trainers and Mi-17 helicopters. This was announced by the Russian Ambassador to Dhaka, Alexander Khozin.

According to him, military-technical cooperation between the countries is developing, and a specialized working group has been operating since 2018.

Russia has already supplied military equipment to Bangladesh, including Mi-17 helicopters and Yak-130 aircraft. Such deliveries remain a subject of discussion.

It should be noted that Bangladesh is under the threat of the American CAATSA law, which provides for the risk of secondary sanctions for purchases of Russian weapons.

In 2021, a contract for the supply of two Mi-171A2 helicopters for the Bangladesh police fell under its effect. The Republic transferred part of the funds, but the delivery of equipment has not yet been completed. Bangladesh also already uses 16 Yak-130 aircraft under a contract from 2014.
