Military Balance: Russia has about 25 combat aircraft of this type in service

The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) have approximately 150 MiG-31 interceptor fighters in various modifications in service. These calculations were published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in the new edition of the Military Balance handbook.

Analysts clarified that among them are about 25 combat aircraft – carriers of Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.

It should be noted that the aircraft carries one missile on the central ventral hardpoint. For its installation, the airframe was modernized, and the onboard equipment and communication systems were updated.

The interceptor is also equipped with digital computers and an electro-remote control system, which automatically guide the MiG-31 to the required point for missile launch.

Earlier it became known that India refused to purchase MiG-31s and preferred Su-30 fighters due to their versatility and simpler logistics.
