Yandex's UMO Electric Car Breaks into Top Three Popular Models on First Attempt

In just 4 months, 3178 electric cars from various manufacturers were sold, with the share of Russian brands exceeding 52%

The Russian market for new electric vehicles (BEV) grew by 20% in January-April 2026, reaching 3178 units. As reported by automotive expert Sergey Tselikov in his Telegram channel, sales in April alone jumped by 28% compared to March and by 14% compared to April last year. However, the share of electric cars in the total volume of passenger car sales remains negligible — 0.8%.

The undisputed leader of the segment is Evolute, assembled in Lipetsk: 1331 cars sold and almost 42% of the market. The main driver is the i-Joy crossover, which sold 1204 units. Geely took second place with a large margin (274 units), and the UMO brand from Yandex, whose UMO 5 crossover has been produced at the Moskvich plant since February and has already been seen in taxis and carsharing, broke into third place for the first time — 245 cars in four months. Chinese Avatr (244 units) and Xiaomi (211 units) close the top five, while the former leader Zeekr dropped to sixth position.

In the model standings, Evolute i-Joy (1204 units) leads by a six-fold margin, followed by UMO 5 (245 units), Geely EX5 (244 units), Avatr 12 (129 units), and Xiaomi YU7 (118 units).

More than half of the electric cars sold are Russian-made; a total of six brands are produced in the country: Evolute, Moskvich, UMO, LADA, AmberAuto, and Eonyx. Atom from KAMAZ and Rosatom is on its way, with its price already published. In fact, the BEV market is turning into a testing ground for the struggle of domestic brands against Chinese ones, where Yandex's UMO, on its first attempt, surpassed Xiaomi and Avatr.
