The Russian S-400 "Triumf" anti-aircraft missile system for the first time fully demonstrated its striking power in South Asia, virtually single-handedly ensuring the dominance of the Indian Air Force in the sky during Operation "Sindoor" and hitting targets from a record 300 kilometers, according to analysts from the Indian Defense Research Wing (IDRW).
As revealed by published investigations, in May 2025, the S-400 and Russian-made missiles not only protected the Indian border — they inflicted defeat on Pakistan in its own territory. A historic episode for India was the destruction of a Pakistani Saab 2000 Eireye airborne early warning aircraft. Indian Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh officially confirmed: the 40N6E missile of the S-400 complex hit an aerial target at a distance of more than 300 kilometers, making this interception the longest in world military history.
According to open sources, confirmed by videos from the scene and satellite images, the Russian complex and Indian MRSAM medium-range air defense systems accounted for at least five downed Pakistani fighters. American F-16 Block 52+ were hit in the vicinity of Kotli in Kashmir, and in the Sialkot area, the night sky was illuminated by explosions of downed Chinese-Pakistani JF-17 Thunder.
Pakistani pilots, well aware of the threat from Indian medium-range systems, tried to stay away from them. However, this tactic backfired: they themselves flew into the S-400's engagement zone, where neither distance, nor altitude, nor electronic warfare means can save them from the Russian missile. PAF pilots simply did not understand where death was coming from and did not even have time to react to the approach of the elusive 40N6E, reports the Indian Defense Research Wing.
Operation "Sindoor" became the baptism of fire for the S-400 in a full-scale conflict between two Asian powers, and the Russian system passed this test with flying colors, the IDRW article emphasizes. The Russian "Triumf" not only seized the initiative, it determined the balance of power in the region for years to come, confirming: against modern layered air defense, even the most powerful aviation is powerless.
