"Elbrus" Not Written Off: Soviet Missile Monster R-17 Spotted in Vietnam's Exercises

The complexes are still operational

The Vietnamese army continues to operate the legendary Soviet operational-tactical missile systems R-17 "Elbrus", better known in the West as Scud-B. Photos, dated April of this year, were published by Vietnamese media.

The images show soldiers of the People's Army of Vietnam during training activities. The equipment, judging by the footage, is maintained in excellent condition and is fully ready for combat use. To extend the service life of the old complexes, the local defense industry has mastered the production of special protective covers made of high-strength rubber.

According to available data, 24 launchers were supplied from the USSR to Vietnam. The missile of the complex weighs 5862 kilograms and carries a warhead weighing 989 kilograms. The firing range reaches 300 kilometers.

The launcher itself weighs about 39 tons and is based on the highly mobile MAZ-543M chassis with an 8x8 wheel arrangement. A 525 horsepower diesel engine allows the heavy machine to accelerate on the highway up to 60 kilometers per hour. The fuel range is 500 kilometers.

The R-17 and its modifications have participated in numerous wars and armed conflicts around the world for decades, earning a reputation as a formidable and reliable weapon. Apparently, the Vietnamese army does not intend to write off the "Elbrus" yet.
