Mining is being brought out of the energy system's shadow: restrictions may reach Moscow and the Moscow region

Previously, bans were imposed in areas with electricity shortages

Authorities are considering restricting cryptocurrency mining in Moscow and the Moscow region. The issue is planned to be discussed on May 18 at a meeting of the government commission for the development of electric power. This was announced by Russian Deputy Minister of Energy Pyotr Konyushenko.

According to him, the initiative is already being developed and has been put on the agenda. The reason for this was appeals from regional authorities, who had previously raised this topic.

As early as the beginning of April, Minister of Energy of the Moscow Region Sergey Voropanov stated that the region sees the need for restrictions. According to the department, 65 data centers with a total capacity of 734 MW are already operating in Moscow and the region. Of these, 19 facilities with a capacity of 233 MW are located in the Moscow region.

In parallel, Russia already has a practice of mining restrictions. From January 1, 2025, to March 15, 2031, it is prohibited in a number of regions — including Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, as well as a number of new regions of Russia.

Additionally, a complete ban has been introduced in the south of the Irkutsk region. In certain areas of Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory, mining is restricted during periods of peak energy consumption.
