Up to 10 aircraft, 5 ships, and more than 3,000 soldiers: Russia and India agree on troop deployment on each other's territory

The agreement has already entered into force and is valid for at least five years

Russia and India have agreed on a new format for military cooperation: the countries will be able to deploy aircraft, ships, and military personnel on each other's territory. The corresponding intergovernmental agreement has already been published on the official legal information portal and entered into force on January 12.

The document includes 21 articles and will be valid for five years with automatic extension. It stipulates the cases in which military personnel may be sent to another country.

It concerns joint exercises and training, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and other cases as agreed by the parties.

The agreement also establishes specific conditions: no more than 3,000 military personnel from another state, up to 10 aircraft, and up to five ships may be present simultaneously on the territory of one country.

At the same time, the parties agreed to simplify the use of airspace and the entry of ships into each other's ports.

The agreement was signed in Moscow in February 2025. Russian President Vladimir Putin ratified it on December 15.
