The authorities of Kuzbass have revealed details of a deep coal processing project for advanced industry. It concerns the production of high-modulus carbon fiber — a strategic material for aviation and space technology.
Scientists from KuzSTU, together with the Graphite Research Institute of the Rosatom State Corporation, have developed a technology for deep processing of coal into high-modulus carbon fiber for aviation and space technology. The material surpasses oil-based analogs in key parameters — 2.5 times stronger in tensile strength and 6 times more resistant to deformation.
The fiber is also 4 times stiffer than steel, conducts heat better than copper, and remains stable at extreme temperatures, which opens up prospects for the aerospace and high-tech industries.
Currently, the Russian carbon fiber market remains very dependent on imports. Enterprises purchase the material abroad or use lower quality oil-based versions. Mastering coal technology could close domestic demand.
KuzSTU specialists are assessing which deep coal processing products will be most in demand by industry. The timing of the launch of production is not yet known.
