The Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant in Petrozavodsk has begun the second stage of modernization. The enterprise is building an automated warehouse complex and reconstructing the launch-and-haul-out facility. After the work is completed, the shipyard will be able to build high ice-class vessels with a displacement of up to 10,000 tons.
The launch of the new capacities will require an expansion of staff. New jobs will appear at the plant in workshops and engineering services. At present, the enterprise, which is part of the structure of Rosmorport, already provides work for more than five hundred employees.
The plant is located on the shore of Lake Onega and has been operating since 1944. The production upgrade will strengthen the enterprise's position in the Arctic shipbuilding market. This is important for the development of the Northern Sea Route and for providing the country with equipment capable of operating in harsh climatic conditions. The completion of modernization is planned for the coming years.
At present, the order portfolio of the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant includes 13 vessels: three port tugboats with ice class Arc4 of project NE038, two shallow-draft icebreakers of project 22740M, six self-propelled barges of project PBSHB6, and two oil skimmers of project NE028.
