Pantsir SAM System Operator Explains Difficulty of Intercepting Low-Flying Drones

Drones hide behind terrain, radars can't see them

Low-flying drones sometimes become a difficult target for the radar station of the Pantsir anti-aircraft missile system (SAM). Details of the complex's operation were revealed by an operator with the call sign Burya.

According to him, drones sometimes move above trees or rivers — radar does not give a clear signal, or they hide behind the terrain.

It's not easy to spot such a target. When we shoot them down, they understand that they can't fly there anymore, and they build a new route. And so on in a circle.

Pantsir combat vehicles are placed in a favorable position — on an artificially created mountain. This way, its radars and optics can look beyond the horizon and detect the drone earlier.

A few weeks ago, the Russian military was spotted with an unusual modernized version of the Pantsir-S1M, but with a new 1RS-3E radar station from the Pantsir-M version.
