The stratospheric drone "Argus" will also conduct optical reconnaissance

The prototype will enter testing in spring 2026

The new stratospheric unmanned aircraft "Argus," in addition to providing communications, will be able to conduct optical reconnaissance. This was reported by the Center for Unmanned Systems and Technologies (CBST).

In spring 2026, Stratolink will launch the first prototype of "Argus" into the sky. The demonstrator will be equipped with a small wing to test the aerodynamic configuration, while the wingspan of the full-scale "Argus" will be 40 m.

It will carry a payload of 40 kg — this should be enough for conducting optical reconnaissance, providing relay services, and distributing 4G or 5G internet.

The Center added that the first large-scale example will appear in 2027 provided that appropriate funding is available.

Andrei Patrakov, head of the flight safety and certification service at RunAvia.ru and an aviation expert, explained to "Pervomu tekhnicheskomu" that "Argus" has good prospects, but regulatory standards still need to be developed for it.

Patrakov also urged not to compare the stratospheric aircraft with the American Odysseus, since Russia is only beginning to develop its competencies in this area.
