Mamakanskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant increased capacity: a new 2.5 MW hydro unit has been synchronized and loaded

The reliability of power supply in the north of Irkutsk Region will improve after full modernization

At the Mamakanskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Bodaybinsky District of Irkutsk Region, a new hydro unit has been launched and synchronized with the Unified Energy System of Russia. The equipment has already reached its first load of 2.5 MW.

The replacement of hydro unit No. 2 will mark the beginning of a large-scale technical re-equipment program for the plant, which provides for the sequential replacement of all four hydro units. Upon completion of the modernization, the installed capacity of the Mamakanskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant will increase by almost one-third, to 112 MW. This will significantly improve the reliability of electricity supply for residents of the northern districts of Irkutsk Region, as well as for gold-mining enterprises, for which the plant remains a key source of energy. The start of work on replacing the next hydro unit is scheduled for September 2026.

The new equipment — a hydro turbine and a hydro generator — was manufactured at the facilities of the TYAZHMASH machine-building concern.

In the near future, the hydro unit will undergo acceptance tests, which include a series of automatic starts, load tests, verification of its ability to regulate frequency in the power system, as well as a comprehensive 72-hour test.

Mamakanskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant, commissioned in 1961–1962, remains an important energy facility in Eastern Siberia, operating in a permafrost zone.
